Convert kilograms to grams

A kilogram holds 1,000 grams. Type a value in kilograms and the result appears as you go. The field accepts fractions, so half a kilo works as 1/2 or 0.5. Further down you will find recipe and label amounts shown next to ounces.

How many grams are in a kilogram?

A kilogram holds 1,000 grams. To go from kilograms to grams you multiply by a thousand: grams = kilograms × 1,000.[1]

The prefix "kilo" means a thousand and behaves the same way everywhere else. A kilometre is a thousand metres and a kilobyte a thousand bytes. Learn the prefix once and the rest of the metric system follows.

In practice it comes down to adding three zeros. Two kilograms give 2,000 grams, and one and a half kilograms give 1,500 grams.

Where grams turn up if you weigh in pounds

Most people reading this weigh themselves in pounds and buy meat by the ounce. Grams reach you anyway, and they reach you in four places.

Nutrition labels. Packaged food in the United States and the United Kingdom lists fat, sugar and protein in grams, whatever unit the pack weight uses. That is why a label can read "16 oz" at the top and "12 g of sugar" three lines down.

Recipes from across the Atlantic. British and European baking is written by mass: 250 g of flour, 125 g of butter. American recipes lean on cups and spoons, so a European recipe sends you straight to a kitchen scale.

Medicine and supplements. Doses come in milligrams, a thousandth of a gram, because the amounts are small enough that milligrams give whole, readable numbers.

And precious metals, where gold and silver are quoted per gram and per troy ounce side by side. The table below puts everyday gram amounts next to the ounces you already picture.

Where the gram came from and why the kilogram is the base unit

The gram was defined in revolutionary France at the end of the eighteenth century as the mass of a cubic centimetre of water. The idea was tidy, but a gram is light — a standard made from that much mass would have been too delicate to weigh anything against.

So the base unit of the SI became the kilogram, the only base unit carrying a prefix in its name. A cylinder of platinum and iridium was made and kept outside Paris, and for more than a century every mass on earth was compared with it.

Over time that cylinder drifted slightly. On 20 May 2019 the kilogram was redefined through the Planck constant, fixed at 6.62607015 × 10⁻³⁴ joule seconds.[1] The unit became a number and stopped changing.

None of this altered the arithmetic. A kilogram still holds 1,000 grams and your flour still weighs exactly what it did before.

What the metric prefixes actually mean

Imperial weights each carry their own step: 16 ounces make a pound and 14 pounds make a stone. The metric system runs on tens, so every step is a shift of the decimal point.

Going smaller: milli is a thousandth, centi a hundredth, deci a tenth. Going larger: deca is ten, hecto a hundred, kilo a thousand. That single row explains milligrams, kilograms and kilometres at once.

The prefixes attach to any unit because they describe scale alone. A kilometre is a thousand metres, a millimetre a thousandth of one, and a kilobyte a thousand bytes.[2]

Two of them come up constantly: hecto is a hundred and kilo is a thousand. Southern Europe still shops in hectograms, which is why an Italian deli sells you meat by the etto.

When you need kilograms turned into grams

Four situations where a value in kilograms is more useful in grams.

  1. A European recipe and a kitchen scale

Baking recipes from Britain and Europe give quantities by mass, often in halves and quarters of a kilogram, while the scale reads grams. Half a kilogram is 500 grams, a quarter is 250 and three quarters is 750. The field takes fractions, so 3/4 works directly.
  2. Reading a nutrition label

Manufacturers state nutrients per 100 grams, while the pack itself might weigh 1.2 kilograms. Working out the whole package needs the mass in grams: 1.2 kilograms is 1,200 grams, which is twelve servings of 100 grams.
  3. Buying gold or silver

Bullion is quoted per gram and per troy ounce, and small bars are sold in gram weights. A 50 gram bar is 0.05 kilograms, and a 250 gram bar is a quarter of a kilogram.
  4. Posting a parcel

Courier price bands are written in grams for light items and kilograms for heavier ones. If the parcel is going somewhere that thinks in pounds, the kilograms to pounds converter handles that step.

Frequently asked questions about kilograms and grams

How many grams are in 1 kilogram?

A kilogram holds 1,000 grams. The number comes from the prefix itself: "kilo" means a thousand, exactly as it does in kilometre and kilobyte.

Is a kilogram 1,000 g or 100 g?

A kilogram holds 1,000 grams, because "kilo" means a thousand. A hundred grams is a hectogram, since "hecto" is the prefix for a hundred. Southern European shops still use hectograms, which is where the Italian etto comes from.

How many grams are in half a kilo?

Half a kilogram is 500 grams, a quarter is 250 grams and three quarters is 750 grams. All three can be typed into the field as fractions: 1/2, 1/4 and 3/4.

How many grams are in 1.5 kg?

1.5 kilograms is 1,500 grams. The arithmetic is 1.5 × 1,000. In the same way 2.5 kilograms gives 2,500 grams and 0.3 kilograms gives 300 grams.

How do I convert kilograms to grams in my head?

Move the decimal point three places to the right, or add three zeros when the number is whole. Two kilograms give 2,000 grams and 0.75 kilograms gives 750 grams. Nothing is rounded, so the mental answer matches the converter exactly.

How many grams are in an ounce?

One ounce holds 28.35 grams, so 100 grams comes to roughly 3.5 ounces. The bridge table above lists the amounts that appear on labels and in recipes with their ounce equivalents.

Why do nutrition labels use grams when the pack weight is in ounces?

Nutrient amounts are small enough that grams give whole, comparable numbers, and stating every product per 100 grams lets shoppers compare two packages directly. The pack weight follows local retail convention, which is why one label can carry both units.

How many milligrams are in a kilogram?

A kilogram holds a million milligrams, since a milligram is a thousandth of a gram and a gram a thousandth of a kilogram. Milligrams turn up mostly on medicine and supplement packaging.

What is the formula for converting kilograms to grams?

The formula is: grams = kilograms × 1,000. The other way round: kilograms = grams ÷ 1,000. Both are exact, with no rounding involved.

Why is the kilogram the SI base unit rather than the gram?

A gram is too light to make a practical mass standard from. When the platinum and iridium cylinder was made in the nineteenth century, a mass a thousand times larger was used, which left the kilogram as the only SI base unit with a prefix in its name.

Is the kilogram still a metal cylinder kept in Paris?

The cylinder still exists, but since 20 May 2019 it no longer defines the kilogram. The unit is now fixed through the Planck constant, so it holds steady over time. Everyday weighing was unaffected.

How many grams are in 5 kg and 10 kg?

5 kilograms is 5,000 grams and 10 kilograms is 10,000 grams. Each figure comes from multiplying the kilograms by a thousand.

How do I type a quarter or half a kilogram?

You can enter the decimal, 0.25 or 0.5, and the field also takes fractions. Type 1/4 or 1/2 and the converter handles it. Mixed fractions such as 1 1/2 work as well.

Do British recipes use grams or ounces?

Modern British recipes are written in grams and millilitres, while older cookbooks and many American ones use ounces and cups. A recipe published in the last twenty years will almost always ask for grams.
