Convert megabytes to gigabytes

Type a number of megabytes and read the result in gigabytes straight away. A gigabyte is 1,024 megabytes in the binary system, so the converter divides your value by 1,024. Use Swap order to convert gigabytes to megabytes instead.

Why convert megabytes to gigabytes?

The megabyte and the gigabyte are neighbouring units of data size: 1 GB is 1,024 MB. Download sizes, RAM and video files are sometimes given in megabytes, while drive capacity and data caps are counted in gigabytes — so you convert MB to GB.

The relationship is fixed: 1 GB is 1,024 MB in the binary system, which operating systems and this converter use. To turn megabytes into gigabytes, divide their number by 1,024. The converter does this the moment you type a value.

Watch out for two systems. In the decimal system (SI), 1 GB is 1,000 MB, which is why 1,000 MB is often mistaken for a whole gigabyte. In fact 1,000 MB is about 0.98 GB, and you reach exactly 1 GB from 1,024 MB. This converter uses the binary system (1,024).

This tool computes both standards: binary (1,024) by default, and the Unit standard button switches it to decimal (1,000). Windows and RAM count in binary, while drive makers, macOS and search engines count in decimal — which is why the same capacity is quoted two different ways.

How does the megabytes to gigabytes conversion work? Formula and example

The conversion rests on a fixed relationship: one gigabyte is 1,024 megabytes. To turn megabytes into gigabytes, divide their number by 1,024.

Full formula: gigabytes = megabytes ÷ 1,024. The other way: megabytes = gigabytes × 1,024.

Example: a RAM module is 4,096 MB. Calculation: 4,096 ÷ 1,024 = 4 GB. Likewise 8,192 MB is 8 GB — which is exactly why memory sizes are powers of two rather than round thousands.

Mind the round values. 1,000 MB is not 1 GB but about 0.98 GB, because a full gigabyte has 1,024 MB. Exactly whole gigabytes come from multiples of 1,024: 1,024 MB, 2,048 MB, 4,096 MB and so on.

In Excel, type the formula =A1/1024 in a cell, where A1 holds the value in MB. The other way, gigabytes to megabytes, use =A1*1024.

The full data unit ladder: from smallest to largest

Every data size unit grows by the same multiplier: each one is 1,024 times larger than the previous. The table below shows the order from byte to petabyte, with a typical example of what each unit describes.

UnitRelationshipTypical example
Byte (B)base unitone character of text
Kilobyte (KB)1,024 Ba short email or icon
Megabyte (MB)1,024 KBa photo or an MP3 song
Gigabyte (GB)1,024 MBa movie or a RAM stick
Terabyte (TB)1,024 GBa hard drive
Petabyte (PB)1,024 TBa large data centre

Order from smallest to largest: byte, kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte, terabyte, petabyte. Each step is a multiplication by 1,024.

When do people most often convert megabytes to gigabytes?

You convert sizes in megabytes to gigabytes mostly for memory and larger files.

  1. RAM and storage

RAM modules and device memory are sometimes given in megabytes. 4,096 MB is 4 GB, and 8,192 MB is 8 GB — converting shows at once how many gigabytes you really have.
  2. Download and video size

Video files, updates and game packages are often given in megabytes. A large value like 5,000 MB becomes readable once turned into gigabytes (about 4.88 GB).
  3. Data usage and caps

Data plans and transfer caps are given in gigabytes, while app usage is in megabytes. Converting lets you check how much of a 1 GB cap 500 MB has already used.
  4. Telling 1000 and 1024 apart

The converter shows plainly that 1,000 MB is not a whole gigabyte but 0.98 GB, and that you reach 1 GB only from 1,024 MB. This is the most common source of confusion with data sizes.

Frequently asked questions about converting megabytes to gigabytes

How many MB are in 1 GB?

1 GB is 1,024 MB in the binary system, which this converter and operating systems use. In the decimal system (SI), used by storage makers among others, 1 GB is 1,000 MB.

Is 1000 MB 1 GB?

Not quite. In the binary system 1,000 MB is about 0.98 GB, because a full gigabyte has 1,024 MB. You reach exactly 1 GB from 1,024 MB. Rounding to 1 GB applies only in the decimal system.

How many GB is 4096 MB?

4,096 MB is exactly 4 GB. Calculation: 4,096 ÷ 1,024 = 4 GB. This is why RAM modules have sizes like 4,096 MB or 8,192 MB — they are powers of two that give whole gigabytes.

How do you convert megabytes to gigabytes?

Divide the number of megabytes by 1,024. For example, 51,200 MB ÷ 1,024 = 50 GB. The converter does this the moment you type a value, with no button to click.

How many GB are 2048 and 8192 MB?

2,048 MB is 2 GB, and 8,192 MB is 8 GB. Both come out whole because they are multiples of 1,024, the number of megabytes in one gigabyte.

How do you convert gigabytes to megabytes?

Multiply the number of gigabytes by 1,024. For example, 4 GB × 1,024 = 4,096 MB. Click Swap order to have the converter work in this direction.

Is 1 GB 1,000 or 1,024 MB?

It depends on the system. Operating systems and this converter use the binary system, where 1 GB is 1,024 MB. Storage makers use the decimal system, where 1 GB is 1,000 MB. That is why the same number of megabytes can give a slightly different result in gigabytes.

How do you convert MB to GB in Excel?

Type the formula =A1/1024 in a cell, where A1 holds the value in megabytes. The other way, gigabytes to megabytes, use =A1*1024. The same formula works in Google Sheets.

What is the order of the units from smallest to largest?

From smallest: byte (B), kilobyte (KB), megabyte (MB), gigabyte (GB), terabyte (TB), petabyte (PB). Each unit is 1,024 times larger than the previous one. A byte describes a single character, while a terabyte describes a drive capacity.
