Convert kilobytes to gigabytes

Type a number of kilobytes and read the result in gigabytes straight away. A gigabyte is 1,048,576 kilobytes in the binary system (that is 1,024 × 1,024), so the converter divides your value by 1,048,576. Use Swap order to convert gigabytes to kilobytes instead.

Why convert kilobytes to gigabytes?

The kilobyte and the gigabyte are two orders of magnitude apart: 1 GB is 1,048,576 KB, that is 1,024 megabytes, each of which is 1,024 kilobytes. Converting KB to GB is handy when you add up large numbers of files given in kilobytes — such as backups, exports or logs — and want the result in more manageable gigabytes.

The relationship is fixed: 1 GB is 1,048,576 KB in the binary system, which operating systems and this converter use. To turn kilobytes into gigabytes, divide their number by 1,048,576. The converter does this the moment you type a value.

Watch out for round values. 1,000,000 KB (a million) is not 1 GB but about 0.95 GB, because a full gigabyte has 1,048,576 KB. It is the same effect as with 1,000 versus 1,024, just two levels higher.

This tool computes both standards: binary (1,024) by default, and the Unit standard button switches it to decimal (1,000). Windows and RAM count in binary, while drive makers, macOS and search engines count in decimal — which is why the same capacity is quoted two different ways.

How does the kilobytes to gigabytes conversion work? Formula and example

The conversion rests on a fixed relationship: one gigabyte is 1,048,576 kilobytes. To turn kilobytes into gigabytes, divide their number by 1,048,576. You can also divide by 1,024 twice — first from KB to MB, then from MB to GB.

Full formula: gigabytes = kilobytes ÷ 1,048,576. The other way: kilobytes = gigabytes × 1,048,576.

Example: a data export is 5,242,880 KB. Calculation: 5,242,880 ÷ 1,048,576 = 5 GB. The value comes out whole because it is a multiple of 1,048,576.

Mind the million. 1,000,000 KB is about 0.95 GB, not 1 GB — you reach exactly 1 GB only from 1,048,576 KB. The multiplier 1,048,576 comes from binary counting: two to the power of twenty is exactly 1,048,576.

In Excel, type the formula =A1/1048576 in a cell, where A1 holds the value in KB. The other way, gigabytes to kilobytes, use =A1*1048576.

Example: 1,048,576 KB ÷ 1,048,576 = 1 GB, while 1,000,000 KB is only 0.95 GB. Want to convert gigabytes to kilobytes? Click Swap order in the converter above.

The full data unit ladder: from smallest to largest

Every data size unit grows by the same multiplier: each one is 1,024 times larger than the previous. The table below shows the order from byte to petabyte, with a typical example of what each unit describes.

UnitRelationshipTypical example
Byte (B)base unitone character of text
Kilobyte (KB)1,024 Ba short email or icon
Megabyte (MB)1,024 KBa photo or an MP3 song
Gigabyte (GB)1,024 MBa movie or a RAM stick
Terabyte (TB)1,024 GBa hard drive
Petabyte (PB)1,024 TBa large data centre

Order from smallest to largest: byte, kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte, terabyte, petabyte. Each step is a multiplication by 1,024.

When do people most often convert kilobytes to gigabytes?

You convert large numbers of kilobytes into gigabytes mostly for totals and data copies.

  1. Totals of sizes in KB

Exports, backups and logs are sometimes reported in kilobytes. Once they add up to a million and more, only converting to gigabytes shows the real scale — 1,000,000 KB is about 0.95 GB.
  2. Making sense of a big KB figure

A seven-digit value in kilobytes is hard to judge at a glance. Converting to gigabytes sorts out the scale at once, for example 5,242,880 KB is exactly 5 GB.
  3. Specs and limits

If a system or report works in kilobytes while you think of a limit in gigabytes, the converter lets you check how many GB something like 52,428,800 KB takes (50 GB).
  4. A million KB is not a gigabyte

The converter shows plainly that 1,000,000 KB is about 0.95 GB, and that a full gigabyte has 1,048,576 KB. It is the same rule as with 1,000 versus 1,024, just two levels higher.

Frequently asked questions about converting kilobytes to gigabytes

How many KB are in 1 GB?

1 GB is 1,048,576 KB in the binary system, which this converter and operating systems use. That is 1,024 × 1,024. In the decimal system (SI), 1 GB is 1,000,000 KB.

Is 1 million KB 1 GB?

Not quite. 1,000,000 KB is about 0.95 GB, because a full gigabyte in the binary system has 1,048,576 KB. You reach exactly 1 GB from 1,048,576 KB. Rounding to 1 GB applies only in the decimal system.

How many GB is 1000000 KB?

1,000,000 KB is about 0.95 GB. Calculation: 1,000,000 ÷ 1,048,576 = 0.95 GB. A million kilobytes does not make a full gigabyte, because that takes 1,048,576 KB.

How do you convert kilobytes to gigabytes?

Divide the number of kilobytes by 1,048,576. You can also divide by 1,024 twice: first from KB to MB, then from MB to GB. The converter does this the moment you type a value.

How many GB are 100,000 and 500,000 KB?

100,000 KB is about 0.10 GB, and 500,000 KB is about 0.48 GB. The values do not come out round because a full gigabyte has 1,048,576 KB, not a million.

How do you convert gigabytes to kilobytes?

Multiply the number of gigabytes by 1,048,576. For example, 2 GB × 1,048,576 = 2,097,152 KB. Click Swap order to have the converter work in this direction.

Is 1 GB 1,000,000 or 1,048,576 KB?

It depends on the system. Operating systems and this converter use the binary system, where 1 GB is 1,048,576 KB. Storage makers use the decimal system, where 1 GB is 1,000,000 KB. That is where the difference at large values comes from.

How do you convert KB to GB in Excel?

Type the formula =A1/1048576 in a cell, where A1 holds the value in kilobytes. The other way, gigabytes to kilobytes, use =A1*1048576. The same formula works in Google Sheets.

What is the order of the units from smallest to largest?

From smallest: byte (B), kilobyte (KB), megabyte (MB), gigabyte (GB), terabyte (TB), petabyte (PB). Each unit is 1,024 times larger than the previous one. A byte describes a single character, while a terabyte describes a drive capacity.
