Lorem Ipsum is over 2,000 years old. The original passage comes from section 1.10.32 of De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum by Cicero, written in 45 BC. The work is a philosophical treatise on ethics - Cicero analysed hedonism and stoicism, arguing for a balanced approach to pleasure and pain.

Using this text as filler in printing dates to around the year 1500, when an unidentified printer used Cicero's passage to create a type specimen book. The text survived five centuries, passing through the eras of hand typesetting, Linotype and phototypesetting.

The modern popularity of Lorem Ipsum began in the 1960s, when Letraset put the text on transfer-lettering sheets used in graphic studios. The decisive breakthrough came in 1985, when Aldus Corporation built Lorem Ipsum into PageMaker as its default placeholder text - one of the first desktop publishing programs. From that moment on, Lorem Ipsum became the industry standard.

Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, identified the source of the text in the 1980s, discovering that the words lorem ipsum are a corrupted fragment of Latin from Cicero's work. His research confirmed that Lorem Ipsum is not a random string of words but has genuine literary roots.

The Lorem Ipsum text is deliberately scrambled - it is not a grammatically correct Latin sentence, so it cannot be translated as a whole. The individual words, however, come from real Latin and have documented meanings or etymological roots:

That is where the popular, tongue-in-cheek "translation" of the opening words as "pain itself" (dolorem ipsum) comes from - but that is an interpretation of isolated fragments pulled from a longer, scrambled text, not a translation of the whole sentence, which makes no sense in Latin.
