Why convert kilobytes to megabytes?
The kilobyte and the megabyte are neighbouring units of data size: 1 MB is 1,024 KB. A file manager or an image optimiser often reports a size in kilobytes, while an attachment limit or a page budget is counted in megabytes — so you convert KB to MB.

Example: a file is 5,120 KB. Calculation: 5,120 ÷ 1,024 = 5 MB. Likewise 10,240 KB is 10 MB, because every 1,024 KB makes up one megabyte.
Mind the round values. 1,000 KB is not 1 MB but about 0.98 MB, because a full megabyte has 1,024 KB. Similarly 100 KB is about 0.10 MB. Exactly whole megabytes come from multiples of 1,024: 1,024 KB, 2,048 KB, 5,120 KB and so on.
