Why convert fluid ounces to millilitres?
The fluid ounce is a volume unit used in the United States and the United Kingdom. Metric millilitres appear whenever a measuring jug, a piece of lab or medical kit, or an imported product is marked in metric, and then you convert. Most often it is the kitchen: a US recipe calls for 8 ounces of milk and the jug in the drawer is marked in millilitres.
The snag is that there are two ounces. The US one is 29.5735 ml, while the UK (imperial) one is 28.4131 ml. The same number of ounces therefore gives two results: 16 ounces is 473.18 ml in the US measure, but 454.61 ml in the UK one. A gap of almost 19 ml can change the texture of a cake, so you pick the right measure with the Ounce type switch.

How does the oz to ml conversion work? Formula and example
Each of the two ounces has its own fixed factor. The US fluid ounce is exactly 29.5735295625 ml, and the UK one is exactly 28.4130625 ml. Both values are defined, so the conversion comes down to a single multiplication.
Formula for the US ounce: millilitres = ounces × 29.5735. For the UK ounce: millilitres = ounces × 28.4131.
Example: a recipe calls for 8 ounces of milk. You substitute: 8 × 29.5735 = 236.59 ml, exactly one US cup. If the recipe were British, the same 8 ounces would be 8 × 28.4131 = 227.30 ml, more than 9 ml less.
Watch out for one mix-up. The fluid ounce (fl oz) measures volume, while a plain ounce (oz) with no qualifier is usually a unit of weight equal to 28.35 g. This tool handles volume only. If a recipe lists 8 ounces of cheese or flour, that is weight and you need a mass converter instead.
