Enter any value in centimeters and instantly see the result in inches. This converter comes in handy wherever dimensions are given in the imperial system: checking height, buying electronics, ordering clothes from US or UK stores, or verifying luggage size limits.

Centimeters are the standard unit of length in most of the world. Inches, on the other hand, dominate in the United States and are still widely used in the United Kingdom. The need to convert arises whenever you encounter dimensions from a metric source: a product listing from a European store, a height given in centimeters by a foreign contact, or clothing size charts that use metric measurements.
One inch is exactly 2.54 cm. This relationship is fixed and universal, so every conversion comes down to a single division. The converter does that for you the moment you type a value.
Further down the page you will find a conversion table for values from 0.5 cm to 200 cm, a separate height table with feet-and-inches equivalents, and a popular screen size table.
The conversion between centimeters and inches is based on one fixed constant: one inch equals exactly 2.54 cm. To convert centimeters to inches, divide the value by 2.54.
Full formula: inches = centimeters ÷ 2.54. The reverse: centimeters = inches × 2.54.
Example: you want to know how many inches 170 cm is (a common height). Calculation: 170 ÷ 2.54 = 66.93 inches. Converted to feet and inches that gives 5 ft 7 in, because one foot is 12 inches and 66.93 ÷ 12 = 5 feet with 6.93 inches remaining.
Another example: a 55-inch TV has a screen diagonal of 55 × 2.54 = 139.70 cm. The converter handles both directions the moment you type a value, so no manual calculation is needed.

Converting cm to inches comes up in a few specific situations. Here is what to keep in mind for each.
One centimeter is approximately 0.3937 inches. This follows from the fixed relationship 1 inch = 2.54 cm, so 1 cm = 1 ÷ 2.54 ≈ 0.3937 in. Rounded to two decimal places: 1 cm = 0.39 in.
The formula is: inches = centimeters ÷ 2.54. One inch is exactly 2.54 cm, so to convert cm to inches you simply divide by 2.54. For example, 30 cm ÷ 2.54 = 11.81 inches.
170 cm is 66.93 inches, which in feet and inches is 5 ft 7 in. Calculation: 170 ÷ 2.54 = 66.93 in; 66.93 ÷ 12 = 5 feet with 6.93 inches remaining, rounded to 7.
15 cm is 5.91 inches. Calculation: 15 ÷ 2.54 = 5.91 in. For a quick comparison: that is roughly the longer side of a smartphone or half of a standard 12-inch ruler.
20 cm is 7.87 inches. Calculation: 20 ÷ 2.54 = 7.87 in. Rounded: 20 cm is just under 8 inches.
40 cm is 15.75 inches. Calculation: 40 ÷ 2.54 = 15.75 in. Among other things, that is the typical width of a cabin suitcase (55 × 40 × 20 cm).
One inch is exactly 2.54 cm. This is a defined constant established in 1959 as the international inch standard, so the conversion is always exact with no rounding needed.
50 cm is 19.69 inches — nearly 20 inches. Calculation: 50 ÷ 2.54 = 19.69 in.
A 55-inch TV has a screen diagonal of 55 × 2.54 = 139.70 cm. Keep in mind that this is the diagonal, not the width. The width of a 16:9 screen at 55 inches is about 122 cm, and the height is about 69 cm.
Quick approximation: divide centimeters by 2.5 instead of 2.54. The error is minimal (about 1.6%), which works fine for rough comparisons. For example, 20 cm ÷ 2.5 = 8 inches (exact value is 7.87). For precise conversions, always use the converter.
A 30 cm ruler is 11.81 inches. Rounded up, 30 cm is almost exactly 12 inches — one foot. In the imperial system, 12 inches = 1 foot = 30.48 cm, so the difference is just 0.48 cm.
25 cm is 9.84 inches. Calculation: 25 ÷ 2.54 = 9.84 in. Rounded: 25 cm is just under 10 inches.
17 cm is 6.69 inches and 18 cm is 7.09 inches. Calculations: 17 ÷ 2.54 = 6.69 and 18 ÷ 2.54 = 7.09. Values in this range come up often for tablets, books, and packaging dimensions.
Most European stores list chest, waist, and hip measurements in centimeters. To convert, divide by 2.54: a bra size listed as 80 cm = 31.5 inches, 90 cm = 35.4 inches, 100 cm = 39.4 inches. Always check the specific brand's size chart, since sizing standards vary between manufacturers.
A standard carry-on measuring 55 × 40 × 20 cm converts to approximately 21.7 × 15.7 × 7.9 inches. The linear sum (total of all three dimensions) is 45.3 inches. Many airlines allow carry-on bags up to 45 linear inches, so this bag just fits within that limit.
The value of 2.54 cm per inch comes from historical standardization agreements. In 1930 the UK adopted this value, and in 1959 the US, Canada, Australia, and other English-speaking countries signed an agreement establishing the international inch: exactly 25.4 mm, which equals 2.54 cm. Earlier, the US survey inch (2.540005 cm) was used for geodetic measurements, but it was officially retired in 2023.
The converter gives the result in decimal inches (e.g., 170 cm = 66.93 in). To convert to feet and inches, divide by 12: the whole number is feet, the remainder is inches. For example, 66.93 ÷ 12 = 5 feet with 6.93 inches remaining, giving 5 ft 7 in. The height table on this page shows ready conversions for values from 150 to 200 cm.
