Convert terabytes to gigabytes

Type a number of terabytes and read the result in gigabytes straight away. A terabyte is 1,024 gigabytes in the binary system, so the converter multiplies your value by 1,024. Use Swap order to convert gigabytes to terabytes instead.

Why convert terabytes to gigabytes?

A terabyte is larger than a gigabyte: 1 TB is 1,024 GB. Drive, NAS and server capacities are given in terabytes, but plans, limits and individual volumes are often described in gigabytes — so you convert TB to GB.

The relationship is fixed: 1 TB is 1,024 GB in the binary system, which operating systems and this converter use. To turn terabytes into gigabytes, multiply their number by 1,024. The converter does this the moment you type a value.

Watch out for two systems. In the decimal system (SI), 1 TB is 1,000 GB — that is how drive makers count. This is why a drive labelled 1 TB shows about 931 GB in the operating system. This converter uses the binary system, where 1 TB is 1,024 GB.

This tool computes both standards: binary (1,024) by default, and the Unit standard button switches it to decimal (1,000). Windows and RAM count in binary, while drive makers, macOS and search engines count in decimal — which is why the same capacity is quoted two different ways.

How does the terabytes to gigabytes conversion work? Formula and example

The conversion rests on a fixed relationship: one terabyte is 1,024 gigabytes. To turn terabytes into gigabytes, multiply their number by 1,024.

Full formula: gigabytes = terabytes × 1,024. The other way: terabytes = gigabytes ÷ 1,024.

Example: a drive is 2 TB. Calculation: 2 × 1,024 = 2,048 GB. Likewise 4 TB is 4,096 GB — that is how many gigabytes sit behind a drive capacity given in terabytes.

Which is bigger? The terabyte. 1 TB is 1,024 GB, so a 10 TB array is 10,240 GB. Fractional capacities are just as simple: 1.5 TB is 1,536 GB.

In Excel, type the formula =A1*1024 in a cell, where A1 holds the value in TB. The other way, gigabytes to terabytes, use =A1/1024.

The full data unit ladder: from smallest to largest

Every data size unit grows by the same multiplier: each one is 1,024 times larger than the previous. The table below shows the order from byte to petabyte, with a typical example of what each unit describes.

UnitRelationshipTypical example
Byte (B)base unitone character of text
Kilobyte (KB)1,024 Ba short email or icon
Megabyte (MB)1,024 KBa photo or an MP3 song
Gigabyte (GB)1,024 MBa movie or a RAM stick
Terabyte (TB)1,024 GBa hard drive
Petabyte (PB)1,024 TBa large data centre

Order from smallest to largest: byte, kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte, terabyte, petabyte. Each step is a multiplication by 1,024.

When do people most often convert terabytes to gigabytes?

You convert terabytes to gigabytes mostly for drive and server capacity.

  1. Drive and NAS capacity

Drives and arrays are given in terabytes, while individual volumes or limits are in gigabytes. A 2 TB drive is 2,048 GB, and 4 TB is 4,096 GB — converting shows the capacity in GB at once.
  2. Servers and hosting

Server plans and transfer limits are sometimes counted in gigabytes, even though the drive capacity is in terabytes. 1 TB is 1,024 GB, so it is easy to split the space into smaller volumes.
  3. Fractional capacities

Drives are sometimes labelled 1.5 TB or 1.2 TB. Converting shows the exact number of gigabytes: 1.5 TB is 1,536 GB, so you can compare them with offers in GB.
  4. A drive's real capacity

The converter helps you understand why a 1 TB drive shows less space in the system. The maker counts in decimal while the system counts in binary — more in the questions below.

Frequently asked questions about converting terabytes to gigabytes

How many GB are in 1 TB?

1 TB is 1,024 GB in the binary system, which this converter and operating systems use. In the decimal system (SI), used by drive makers, 1 TB is 1,000 GB.

How many GB are 2 TB and a 4 TB drive?

2 TB is 2,048 GB, and 4 TB is 4,096 GB. You get each value by multiplying the number of terabytes by 1,024, the number of gigabytes in one terabyte.

How much is 1 TB in GB?

1 TB is exactly 1,024 GB. Calculation: 1 × 1,024 = 1,024 GB. This is the base relationship between the terabyte and the gigabyte.

How do you convert terabytes to gigabytes?

Multiply the number of terabytes by 1,024. For example, 10 TB × 1,024 = 10,240 GB. The converter does this the moment you type a value, with no button to click.

How many GB is 1.5 TB?

1.5 TB is 1,536 GB. Calculation: 1.5 × 1,024 = 1,536 GB. Fractional drive capacities convert the same way as whole ones, by multiplying by 1,024.

Why does a 1 TB drive show about 931 GB?

Because the maker labels the drive in the decimal system: 1 TB is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. The operating system counts in binary and divides that by 1,073,741,824 (1 GB in binary), which gives about 931 GB. This converter shows the pure binary relationship, where 1 TB is 1,024 GB.

How do you convert gigabytes to terabytes?

Divide the number of gigabytes by 1,024. For example, 2,048 GB ÷ 1,024 = 2 TB. Click Swap order to have the converter work in this direction.

How do you convert TB to GB in Excel?

Type the formula =A1*1024 in a cell, where A1 holds the value in terabytes. The other way, gigabytes to terabytes, use =A1/1024. The same formula works in Google Sheets.

What is the order of the units from smallest to largest?

From smallest: byte (B), kilobyte (KB), megabyte (MB), gigabyte (GB), terabyte (TB), petabyte (PB). Each unit is 1,024 times larger than the previous one. A byte describes a single character, while a terabyte describes a drive capacity.
