Convert gigabytes to kilobytes

Type a number of gigabytes and read the result in kilobytes straight away. A gigabyte is 1,048,576 kilobytes in the binary system (that is 1,024 × 1,024), so the converter multiplies your value by 1,048,576. Use Swap order to convert kilobytes to gigabytes instead.

Why convert gigabytes to kilobytes?

A gigabyte is far larger than a kilobyte: 1 GB is 1,048,576 KB. Converting GB to kilobytes is needed less often than to megabytes, but it comes up when a system, script or spec expects a value in kilobytes while you know the capacity in gigabytes.

The relationship is fixed: 1 GB is 1,048,576 KB in the binary system, which operating systems and this converter use. To turn gigabytes into kilobytes, multiply their number by 1,048,576. The converter does this the moment you type a value.

Watch out for two systems. In the decimal system (SI), 1 GB is 1,000,000 KB — that is how storage makers count, for example. This converter uses the binary system (1,048,576 KB), matching what Windows and macOS show.

This tool computes both standards: binary (1,024) by default, and the Unit standard button switches it to decimal (1,000). Windows and RAM count in binary, while drive makers, macOS and search engines count in decimal — which is why the same capacity is quoted two different ways.

How does the gigabytes to kilobytes conversion work? Formula and example

The conversion rests on a fixed relationship: one gigabyte is 1,048,576 kilobytes. To turn gigabytes into kilobytes, multiply their number by 1,048,576. You can also multiply by 1,024 twice — first from GB to MB, then from MB to KB.

Full formula: kilobytes = gigabytes × 1,048,576. The other way: gigabytes = kilobytes ÷ 1,048,576.

Example: a drive is 16 GB. Calculation: 16 × 1,048,576 = 16,777,216 KB. The numbers grow fast, because each gigabyte is over a million kilobytes.

Which is bigger? The gigabyte. 1 GB is 1,048,576 KB, so it is over a million times larger than a kilobyte. This shows just how big the scale gap between the two units is.

In Excel, type the formula =A1*1048576 in a cell, where A1 holds the value in GB. The other way, kilobytes to gigabytes, use =A1/1048576.

The full data unit ladder: from smallest to largest

Every data size unit grows by the same multiplier: each one is 1,024 times larger than the previous. The table below shows the order from byte to petabyte, with a typical example of what each unit describes.

UnitRelationshipTypical example
Byte (B)base unitone character of text
Kilobyte (KB)1,024 Ba short email or icon
Megabyte (MB)1,024 KBa photo or an MP3 song
Gigabyte (GB)1,024 MBa movie or a RAM stick
Terabyte (TB)1,024 GBa hard drive
Petabyte (PB)1,024 TBa large data centre

Order from smallest to largest: byte, kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte, terabyte, petabyte. Each step is a multiplication by 1,024.

When do people most often convert gigabytes to kilobytes?

You convert gigabytes to kilobytes less often than to megabytes, mostly in technical situations.

  1. Values in KB in systems and scripts

Some scripts, APIs or config fields expect a size in kilobytes. When you know the capacity in gigabytes, you convert it to KB — for example 2 GB is 2,097,152 KB.
  2. Grasping the scale

Converting shows just how large a number of kilobytes hides behind a gigabyte. 16 GB is 16,777,216 KB, which makes the gap between the units clear.
  3. Capacity in KB

If you want to express a card or drive capacity in kilobytes, for example to compare with small files, the converter gives the exact number with no manual multiplication.
  4. Which is bigger: GB or KB

The converter shows plainly that the gigabyte is bigger: 1 GB is 1,048,576 KB, over a million times more. This helps sort out the scale of data units.

Frequently asked questions about converting gigabytes to kilobytes

How many KB are in 1 GB?

1 GB is 1,048,576 KB in the binary system, which this converter and operating systems use. That is 1,024 × 1,024. In the decimal system (SI), 1 GB is 1,000,000 KB.

Which is bigger, GB or KB?

The gigabyte. 1 GB is 1,048,576 KB, so it is over a million times larger than a kilobyte. It is the largest scale gap among the neighbouring data units people usually compare.

How much is 1 GB in KB?

1 GB is exactly 1,048,576 KB. Calculation: 1 × 1,048,576 = 1,048,576 KB. This is the base relationship between the gigabyte and the kilobyte.

How do you convert gigabytes to kilobytes?

Multiply the number of gigabytes by 1,048,576. You can also multiply by 1,024 twice: first from GB to MB, then from MB to KB. The converter does this the moment you type a value.

How many KB are 2, 4 and 16 GB?

2 GB is 2,097,152 KB, 4 GB is 4,194,304 KB, and 16 GB is 16,777,216 KB. You get each of these by multiplying the number of gigabytes by 1,048,576.

How do you convert kilobytes to gigabytes?

Divide the number of kilobytes by 1,048,576. For example, 1,048,576 KB ÷ 1,048,576 = 1 GB. Click Swap order to have the converter work in this direction.

Is 1 GB 1,000,000 or 1,048,576 KB?

It depends on the system. Operating systems and this converter use the binary system, where 1 GB is 1,048,576 KB. Storage makers use the decimal system, where 1 GB is 1,000,000 KB. That is where the difference at large values comes from.

How do you convert GB to KB in Excel?

Type the formula =A1*1048576 in a cell, where A1 holds the value in gigabytes. The other way, kilobytes to gigabytes, use =A1/1048576. The same formula works in Google Sheets.

What is the order of the units from smallest to largest?

From smallest: byte (B), kilobyte (KB), megabyte (MB), gigabyte (GB), terabyte (TB), petabyte (PB). Each unit is 1,024 times larger than the previous one. A byte describes a single character, while a terabyte describes a drive capacity.
